I know that lots of family reads this blog - including two about-to-be first time Great Grandmas! So I wanted to give a quick update on how baby and I are at this late date. Due date is January 30, as you may know. We had our 38 week scan and a CTG yesterday, and baby was healthy and active with a couple spells of the hiccups. The doctor thought that baby was a tiny bit on the small side, but provided I don't deliver for another week, s/he will catch right up. My levels are good and I feel well, all things considered.
As far as prep goes, baby is packed for the big birthday, new snowsuit included! I still need to pack myself. And this weekend, Will and I are hunkering down to do some organizing/cleaning/cooking in preparation for a chore hiatus. Even the poodles have to make sacrifices: they'll both be groomed this up coming week.
This kiddo has been a trooper so far, accompanying me on an intra-and-inter continental move, a 10-day silent meditation retreat, 3 weeks of sleeping on the floor, and now intensive language classes two train rides away during our last month attached! We're feeling positive that we've got more good times to come.
Love to all, Rachael, Will and Baby

So happy to hear that everything is going well! Can't wait to meet the little one!
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear that everything is right on track, and I know from experience that even without the transitions you've made that the anticipation at this time is what sets the tone for each new day until B-day. From then on it's all about the baby. What you said about the size of the baby; when I was carrying Ivar, I was doing weekly visits to the clinic at week 32 because they were sure he'd be a tiny thing. He wasn't at all, his birthweight was a little bit above average. I did a lot of worrying for nothing. I have two friends who went through that same routine, both delivering big babies... we concluded that the health practitioners don't like small bumps!:)
ReplyDeleteThank you both! And, Agusta, that is really nice to hear. Will works with medical imaging and he said that measuring weight with ultrasound is not very accurate. As you can imagine, a German ob/gyn does not give you such news with subtlety or indecision :) I let mean-ol-doktor bother me for an evening, but I'm working on letting her go.
ReplyDeleteYou've done everything right, this baby is going to do fine, even if on the lighter side, s/he will just make it up in no time. Medicine is obsessed with 'mean' and 'median', forgetting that there are a lot of healthy people on both ends of the spectrum. And Will is right, the machines aren't always accurate and neither are the people who read them. I support your effort to let it go, it's what's best for you and baby.
ReplyDeleteFWIW, Pete weighed 5 pounds when he was born. So perhaps you should *hope* for a wee little thing so he can grow up to be a 6'4", 200-lb, (imaginary) zombie slayer. Rawr.
ReplyDeleteToo much information is bad for your health. I wish the doctor had shared her wisdome in French without a translator.
ReplyDeleteWishing you, Will and the wee one all the best, Rachael. I've been up in Aachen for the last 10 days or so and wish I were closer to Munich so I could come by and say hi! Maybe in July...
ReplyDelete-Laura
Hi Laura! I hope your trip is going well. It is a shame it's not closer! Bit by bit, we are getting into the swing of things here. It is really a wonderful city, though I am looking forward to a post-snow period - site-seeing is a little perilous these days...
